Creating a beautiful, seamless website for Lowitja Institute
Partner
Background
Lowitja Institute is Australia’s only national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health research institute. It works for the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through high-impact, quality research, knowledge exchange, and support for a new generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health researchers.
Continuing our digital partnership with Lowitja Institute
Following on from a successful project to digitise their Cultural Safety Audit Tool Lowitja Institute continue its digital partnership with Code for Australia to redevelop its website.
Code for Australia’s model has been successful in helping not-for-profit organisations across Australia embrace innovative technologies. Code for Australia has a clear flat rate fee structure, and because we are a social enterprise operating on a not-for-profit basis, we can provide high-quality work and independent advice at a lower price point than other agencies.
Always start with user research
To begin the process of redeveloping the website, Code for Australia conducted research with internal and external users to understand the current issues and aspirations for a new website.
Lowitja Institute staff had several requirements for their website, which included:
An improved content management experience
Easy-to-use database for resources and publications
Store functionality so products and courses can be easily purchased
A members portal that can be managed by staff
A beautiful, seamless user experience
To meet the needs of Lowitja Institute Code for Australia has designed a beautiful, balanced website that reflects the Institute's brand seamlessly. The design has been compartmentalised using grids to improve readability and users’ ability to find the information they are after.
Using WordPress and appropriate plugins, Code for Australia has designed and built a website that provides an enticing, functional browsing experience and an easy-to-maintain backend for Lowitja Institute staff.
The website features commerce capability, management of learning products, a library and tools such as the Cultural Safety Audit tool, which Code for Australia also developed. You can read about our work on the Cultural Safety Audit tool here. Thanks to the content management system, staff can easily upload and manage new news items, events, and media releases.
Usability testing helped Code for Australia hone the structure and experience of the website before it was launched.
