Digital maturity is a topic we hear about a lot in the public sector. How do we measure it? What should the end goal be? And importantly, how do we improve it? In this episode we’ll be talking to Lara Stephenson, the Lead Researcher on Code for Australia’s Digital Maturity Indicator - a tool to help organisations measure, benchmark and improve their digital maturity across six key areas.

Lara Stephenson, Digital Maturity Indicator Lead

Lara will be speaking to us about what digital maturity actually looks like in the public sector and the frameworks and methodologies we can utilise to benchmark and improve it within government teams.

She’ll also be filling us in on a great way to get involved - a whole of government survey, which will help establish a baseline for digital maturity across the sector and result in a report featuring actionable recommendations to improve support for teams and individuals involved in digital delivery.

You can complete the survey here.

The Digital Maturity Indicator:

The Digital Maturity Indicator (DMI) is a tool to help organisations measure, benchmark and improve their digital maturity across six key areas.

The DMI was developed by Code for Australia in partnership with the NSW Public Service Commission, and is based on research from the Harvard-Kennedy School of Government. We measure your organisation’s current level of digital maturity, with a view to co-design and prioritise actions to help you improve.

It’s about transforming the public service to be more digital, connected, communicative and effective and there are three flexible assessment options to suit all budgets and requirements.

The whole of Government Survey:

The survey will help establish a baseline for digital maturity across the sector and result in a report featuring actionable recommendations to improve support for teams and individuals involved in digital delivery.

We're keen to hear from folks working at all levels of government within a multitude of roles including, service delivery, project delivery, digital, communications, and more.

The final report will include:

  • Aggregated data that will provide a snapshot of the Australian public service's digital capabilities
  • An in-depth analysis of the results and implications
  • A list of actionable recommendations and resources for teams across the public sector to utilise based on the results

Our recommendations to improve the Public Sector's Digital Maturity

In 2022 we leveraged the DMI framework in a survey to assess Digital Maturity across all levels of Government in Australia. The results and our recommendations are now available.
